• Since its inception in September of 1994, the Young Artists Program has afforded its students a wealth of opportunity and recognition:  

• Feature print and online articles in the Washington Post, Baltimore Sun, Columbia Flier,  Howard Magazine,  OurKids.com and venues

• Nominated for Best Arts Educator in Howard County by patrons of the Howard County Arts Council 

• Voted Best Drama School and Best Children's Theatre  by Washington Families Newspaper 5 years in a row

• Live performances at Ravens Stadium, Merriweather Post Pavilion, The Montpelier Festival of the Arts, Highland Days Festival, Strathmore Center for the Arts, Macy's Pentagon City and more!

• Sold-out performances of original musical comedies, including performances at Ravens Stadium,  (the former) Zany Brainy Stores,  (the former) Borders Bookstore, and the Rouse Theater.

• Voted Most Family-Friendly Business in Howard County by County Executive Ken Ulman and the County Council

• Performances on television, in videos & in live theatre- Young Artists students have won roles at various venues including The Discovery Channel, Ford's Theatre, the National Touring Company of "The Sound of Music", the Disney Channel, Voice of America,  in educational videos and industrials, singing the anthem for the Orioles, Nationals, the Governor, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and more!

 

About Kathy MacDonald,
Director of the
Young Artists Theatre

 

 
Kathy MacDonald 
brings a unique perspective to teaching, having been a performer since childhood 
and then a director of theatrical 
and television productions as well.  
Working  professionally 
since age 9, she has since performed 
major roles in over 30 area productions and directed shows at several local theatres. 
She co-wrote and directed/performed in
two USO shows that toured Europe to entertain our troops.
Kathy was also an original member of Toby Orenstein's iconic Columbia-based musical touring group "The Young Columbians"-a group she assembled for one performance in 1975, but which ultimately toured the country, performed at the White House for President Jimmy Carter, opened the Tomorrow Land Stage at Disney World Orlando, 
and had regular bookings 
as a dinner show for Marriott, 
and summer entertainment at Wolf Trap.  
In addition to her theatrical
work, 
Kathy is also a broadcast media professional, having written and directed 
commercials for major sporting events and industrial films.  
She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Acting from Catholic University of America and a Masters degree in Film and Video from American University.  
A member of the Howard County Arts Council, she is dedicated to helping children and adults find their voice, using theatrical instruction as a tool to build self-confidence.
